In recent years, the UN and governments have prioritized the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a fundamental guide to face global challenges, highlighting among them SDG 2, "Zero Hunger". The alarming reality is that, despite the efforts made, nearly 690 million people currently suffer from hunger, and without significant changes, this number could increase to 840 million by 2030. Eradicating hunger and improving food security requires not only increasing food production, but also ensuring its equitable and efficient distribution. In addition, the quality and safety of food are crucial to guarantee its nutritional value, which directly affects the health and well-being of the population, addressed in SDG 3.
The Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) underlines the importance of food security, with emphasis on food safety, which impacts key sectors such as trade, tourism, health and education. With the aim of promoting cooperation and applied research in this area, INTEC is promoting the creation of the Dominican Food Safety Research Network (REDIIA) and the National Food Safety Observatory (ONIA). These initiatives seek to strengthen the development of national policies and strategies to address this crucial issue in the context of the SDGs, promoting collective and effective action.
