Synopsis

This book delves into the complex reality of the Island of Santo Domingo, with a special focus on immigration in the Dominican Republic, leaving the current crisis in Haiti in the background. The author explores how various waves of immigrants from different cultures and origins have contributed to shaping Dominican society, creating a unique and diverse migration model, described as a "cultural stew." This model has allowed the integration and adaptation of multiple ethnic groups over time, consolidating itself in the Dominican national identity.

However, the book also addresses the particularity of the Haitian immigrant, who is presented as an exception in this multicultural process. Unlike other groups, the Haitian presence in the Dominican Republic poses unique challenges and calls into question the formation of Dominican society, highlighting the tensions and sociocultural differences between the two countries that share the island. The author invites the reader to reflect on the impact of immigration on the construction of national identities and the evolution of coexistence on the island, in a context marked by uncertainty and constant change.
