Synopsis

The transition to more sustainable and resilient energy systems is a global priority to address current environmental and social challenges. Within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7 which advocates for affordable and clean energy, countries seek to transform their energy systems to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change. In the Dominican Republic, the transition is especially difficult due to its island location and lack of electrical interconnections with other nations. Obstacles such as limited infrastructure and dependence on traditional sources hinder the adoption of renewable energy, although the inclusion of battery storage systems shows potential to improve the stability of the electrical grid.

To advance this transition, the country has initiated regulatory and investment efforts in renewable energy, reaching significant installed capacity in wind, solar and hydroelectric technologies. However, the regulatory framework needs to be strengthened and investment in networks encouraged to facilitate the integration of new technologies and achieve the goal of 25% renewable energy by 2025. Institutions such as the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (INTEC) play a fundamental role in supporting innovative research and proposals that promote the country's energy sustainability and resilience, collaborating with the public and private sectors to boost economic and environmental development.
